He whipped his head. “Quiet,” he hissed.
She strained to hear, watching his face.
In one fluid moment, he stood up, weapons in hand, looking every inch the warrior he was. His total focus was on the entrance to the cave. Muscles corded, rippling and bunching as he tensed for battle.
She groped for the throwing knives, taking her cue from his rigid stance. Something was not right.
He stalked towards the opening, mouth drawn back in a silent snarl.
“Don’t go out there,” she croaked. “You don’t have any idea what it is.”
His absolute attention did not waver for one moment. “Douse the fire,” he whispered.
She butt-crawled to the pit, tossing dirt on the glowing coals. The cave grew darker and then pitch black. The only sound was her own labored breathing. Her eyes adjusted and she could see his dark form outlined against the moonlight shining through the cave opening. He was crouched down, a mere shadow.
A twig snapped. A low rumbling broke the silence.
